Do I Want a PS3?
WORDS BY: Dan Amrich
This is not intended to mock anybody or anything. I do not want to create a flame war. I think the console wars in general are stupid and I firmly believe that, like cars and guitars, any game machine out there can make you a happy gamer, but no one car or guitar or game machine works for everyone. But I do have a serious question for PS3 owners, particularly any who also own a 360.
Do you like it? Do you use it?
I keep feeling like I should own one, on a geek level, but I honestly can’t find a reason to. I just looked at the top 50 PS3 games by sales and I have either played them on 360 or have no interest in playing them. MGS4 is simply not my kind of game (I don't even much care for Splinter Cell, which just sort of makes Ryan shake his head in pity). The appeal of LittleBigPlanet baffles me — it looks like a mix of platform games (which I don’t enjoy, Braid excepted) and making my own games (which requires effort -- plus it's something I've shown myself to be particularly bad at). Also, none of those games offer Achievements, and I have bought into that crazy yardstick. I have a stack of 360 games waiting for my attention that I'd love to play in my spare time. So right there…I don’t see myself playing it much. (And I bought Everyday Shooter on Steam.)
Blu-ray seems to be the biggest motivation. I don’t watch movies that much, honestly, and my wife Kat has pointed out quite fairly that the difference between upsampled DVDs and 1080p native is, to our eyes, not a big deal. And I love Joss Whedon, but do I need to buy Firefly again? Will even my favorite movies, like This is Spinal Tap, really look significantly better to me? And if I really want Blu-ray, there are cheaper players that, frankly, are not as aesthetically displeasing as the weirdly concave PS3.
Of course, they won’t run Twisted Metal. I am a really big car combat fan and the 360 is seriously lacking in this department (Novadrome don't cut it). Twisted Metal is in development for PS3 but Sony hasn’t said a word. My friends at PTOM left it off their “10 Games to Watch in 2009″ list because it’s still a big question mark. Maybe it’s late 09, maybe it’s 2010. Still not a good reason for me to own one tomorrow.
That leaves…disease. I am a really big supporter of the Folding@Home program, a distributed computing effort that puts spare computer cycles to work trying to deconstruct proteins in an effort to find new ways to combat tricky diseases. Very noble. I have been active for some years now. And the PS3 has a customized client for folding, which, alas, the 360 does not. I would love to fold on a PS3.
The most interesting thing I can think of to do with a PS3 is…crunch numbers for science. I’m not being facetious. I just don’t have a connection with this thing, because it does not seem to solve a problem or fulfill a need for me.
Seriously, PS3 owners: What am I missing? Or is this machine just not meant for me? Your snark-free responses are appreciated.

If you're a rich Nancy boy then just skip this page because you could probably buy all three next gen consoles and then buy the same game for all consoles to see if it differs or not. I think that the whole Console war is stupid, if you want a war, enlist in the army. I've come to realize that both consoles have unique things about them, The Xbox tends to have cheaper classics and more shooters that the PS3, and then the PS3 has free online play and more less violent games.
I own an Xbox 360. Even though i had a PS2. The reason, because i had played halo on a PC and i saw a thing for halo 3 and then i went "hmmmm, both seem pretty good but pretty similar, The 360 has more games on it, the PS3 more hard drive space" Then i thought that since it was made by Microsoft it will probably be good. (yeah, didn't know about the RROD). I have never regretted my decision, though i did like the look of resistance,
i say this, if you have one or the other, don't bother, if you're new, try both consoles out and read reviews from trusted websites, ask mates, see whats more popular (In Australia The xbox 360 is more popular) or just ask for one or the other for Christmas and see what you get. My point is, there is no war, don't worry, just decide.

I must agree with domformula1. I only got a 360 for the exclusives. PS3 is my main machine. The few games I have owned/played for the 360 have been great(i.e. Star Ocean 4, Lost Odyssey, Mass Effect), and I'm looking forward to some future exclusives(Splinter Cell, HALO ODST). None of these can stand up to God of War 3, Uncharted 2, Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, and Final Fantasy XIII(I know FF XIII is comin out on 360 but thats a joke). The PSN works just as well as XBL but its free so that makes it better. The browser is great too. Its like having a PC on my plasma. I'll leave it at this, I only buy games on 360 if I have to.

to be fair to everyone, I own both, but since I got the PS3 hooked up with HDMI, the 360 has gathered dust, from a library of 20-odd games, I now only have GOW 1&2 and Mass Effect, I cancelled my gold membership as it simply wasn't worth it any more as most have my friends commuted to the PS3.
The 360 just stopped "doing it for me" I was tempted by Fable 2 but just couldn't be bothered. I am hanging onto the 360 for the excellent Mass Effect 2, which for me justifies owning the machine alone, but that's all Im holding onto it for, the exclusives

Someone in an earlier comment mentioned everyone on the forum wanting the same flavor on an XBOX website. I think that person misses the point......It's about the GAMES....not so much the hardware. I love my Xbox and Xbox 360, had them since day one, and have been a member of Xbox Live since the beta, but............ I LOVE games!!!!!! I recently began that taboo love affair and *gasp* bought a PS3 for Killzone 2, Socom, Little Big Planet, etc.....(i.e. PS3 Exclusives).
Here's what I found.........Dislike the Sixaxis Controller (seems flimsy & has internal battery). Dislike Playstation Home and Playstation Network (Will gladly pay for the infrastructure of XBL, Home is useless, as it is a marketing area as far as I'm concerned). Dislike headset not being included, as few people have purchased them.
I found out conversely that I LOVE MLB 09 BASEBALL.....who knew, thought I hated the sport. This is a GREAT title, and made me remember what it was like to play Little League again. I even have begun taking my son to see Tampa Rays games. I love Killzone 2 and really think it is different than Halo, but just as fun. Also, Microsoft came out with Lips, which I bought as my wife loves this kind of thing......it was OK.......and mainly kept it because of the mics being patched into Rock Band 2. Singstar and the Singstar Store is awesome, I have already spent hundreds of dollars on new music. Uncharted was a brilliant single player game that rivals playing an Indiana Jones movie (not the game it was only OK).
The BEST new thing I discovered about the PS3 is it uses REGION FREE DISCS (for the most part). Go back and read what I just wrote again, to punctuate it. I just imported Singstar games from the UK that won't be out here until September or later and the wireless mics for Singstar. I have been waiting to learn the sport Cricket forever. Well now I will be able to import it in June or July. That's an awesome feature in it self. UK Pounds rate is way down so you can import some games for what you would pay at your local retailer.
Now don't get me wrong I still purchase 95% of my games on the XBOX 360, but if you have the extra funds sitting around, and you would love games (and now baseball) as much as I do, go ahead and send the money. It's a nice diversion now and then.
Stand & Deliver!!!!!

Dan Amrich I have one thing to say too you!
Are you content with your X-box 360?
If so you don't need to own a PS3!
The Pay-To-Play X-box Live experience is just that a experience! Sure there are some really good games for PS3 but most of them are on the 360 there is only a few PS3 games that are worth noting MGS4 LittleBigPlanet and Gears of War 3 and honestly if you feel like playing these borrow a friends console because its a lot cheaper than buying another system. I know we all live in the dream of owning multiple consoles but its not really necessary! The only reason I can see buying a PS3 would be a Blu-Ray player but honestly I'm content with regular DVD format it does the job... and well if it aint broke don't fix it!

Well honestly, I sort of stumbled onto this article.... While I'm here, I may as well shed some light on a few things.
I understand why you ask your question, but I don't understand where you've asked your question... What I mean is this: Why would you ask such a thing on a site for xbox 360? Not a very good place to ask such things. I'm not saying to go a Playstation 3 site either. I'm not saying everyone here is a 360 fanboy-I simply mean that they ALL share the same taste; For 360 that is. Otherwise they wouldn't be here. Now, I own both a PS3 and 360. I think you should have both. Now, the truth of the matter is that PS3 is just a better console in terms of hardware, but 360 more that makes up for it with the network it's backed up by (although this "advantage" on PS3 is dampered by the fact that the only reason it's better is because you have to pay for it-If you don't pay and have a silver membership, it's WAY worse than the Playstation network) , not to mention the larger library of games. On average my 360 has more games and "things to do". But once a developer hits the sweet spot, (In my case it's Resistance 2) the PS3 can't be beat. More than anything else, I think you need to closely evaluate this for yourself. I have my opinons like everyone else, and although to me the Wii isn't even worth mentioning-It's YOUR preference that matters.... So, take your time and see it for yourself.

PS3 sucks online with multi-player and they just don't have enough good games to spend 3-4 hundred bucks for.

I own a XBOX 360 Premium, and my fiance owns a PS3. I sometimes use the PS3 only because I used that before getting a 360, and have friends on the PS3 that dont own 'nor want a 360. I dont watch movies on the PS3, but I do on the XBOX 360. And as in terms of folding@home, most 360 users have a computer and pc users can download the Windows/MAC OS versions of folding@home which does the exact same thing as the PS3. Why buy a PS3 for the sole purpose of folding@home and a blue-ray player, when you can buy a blue-ray player for your home. The PS3 has the "Trophies" which I call the Fake 360 Achievements. Overall, Sony is trying to outbid 360 owners in the software and hardware they can develop, and furthermore, the PS3's web browser is the worst since Apple in the early 1990's. Also, XBOX 360 users can view and join already in progress games with friends, limited to the PS3, they can only send invites and view the exact game a friend is playing. Also their "Playstation Home" is not the greatest, and users have to buy items for their "home" and character that will not be around forever, which is a waste of time. Why would someone want to hang in a computer generated environment as they would in real life. Gaming systems like the PS3 should have limitations, and Sony is trying to make the system more than what it should've been.

I actually own 3 PS3s (40Gb, and 2 MGS4 80Gb), use all for gaming and for Blu-ray. I also recently purchased a 360 Arcade (Jasper version, added the 120Gb HDD). I love both systems! Each has its advantages and it completes our ability to play any exclusive games. We also have a Wii and just about every other game console since the Atari 2600. We play everything in our home. My wife would be Wii Fitting in one room, my daughter playing Spongebob on the Gamecube or Spyro on the PS3, while I am in another room playing Halo 3 or Metal Gear Solid 4. Like I said, we play everything. We have a game room with 2 TVs and 14 game consoles set up. Don't limit yourself, just get both systems and have fun. After all, fun is the goal, right?

Save your money and buy a BD player; they are much cheaper now. I never had a clue what an Xbox 360 was until I bought a launch PS3 and realized that all the games I wanted to play were on the Xbox 360. I talked my wife into letting me get an Xbox 360 as well and we've never looked back. I no longer have the PS3; one less item to dust in the house and my wife has her own Elite which never needs dusting.

I have kids!! It goes without saying that we have the 360 (2 of them) a PS2 (2 of them too), a PS3, a WII and my son has a DS Lite. We have far more 360 games than PS3. The original reason for buying the PS3 wasn't for gaming but for the Blue Ray. I must say I really like the way a Blue Ray movie looks on my TV. So, with the additional features I get with the PS3 than just having a Blue Ray player, I feel like I made a good purchase.
Now, I play far more 360 games than PS3 (even though my gamer score isn't all that high due to being much more of a casual gamer than a hard core one that has to kill everything that moves). I really do enjoy them too - the graphics, the story lines the controls. The feel of the controller fits my hands better. I'm not sure if that's just my own psyche or not but I like the 360 controllers a lot more than the others - WII included.
I have some PS3 games and I have to say I really do enjoy them too. I'm not all that gung ho about the gamer score so I don't miss not getting achievments though I do like unlocking them when I do. But, the games look good, they play well and are fun to get into the story lines as well.
My feelings (as little as they may be) is buy whatever 'floats your boat' and makes you feel good to have. I like all of the consoles my family has but all for different reasons. Each console brings its own flavor to your games and how they're played. I think players should simply accept them for that reason and go from there.
If you just don't want a PS3 simply because it isn't a 360, well, if that's how you feel fine. But, you just might be missing something you would like about the console but can't have without one.

I know that I'll be parroting here for the most part, but I own my 360, PS3, and a Wii. I play any and all games on them on a 61 inch 1080p DLP by Samsung and pump their audio through a 7.1 Pioneer surround sound system.
I just got the Wii for Christmas, and I thoroughly enjoy playing Golf and bowling (occasionally) on it.
I have had my 360 since about 3 weeks after launch (I have since upgraded to an Elite though).
I have had the PS3 for 7 months.
I own close to 115 games for my 360, which I play constantly.
I own four games for my Wii, which I play occasionally.
I don't own any games for my PS3. Period.
There just isn't enough interest in the games available for it, for me. Killzone 2 looks very intriguing but it would take time from playing on XBL with my friends, and I don't want to do that.
I have played several demos on the PS3 and the 360 for comparison sake, and the 360 experience, for me, is far better. Between the actual frame-rates of the games, the graphics, the feel of immersion in the games, the controllers, the online play system, the Gamerscore/Achievements system vs. Trophy system, the 360 just presents a better overall environment for gaming.
This is not your PS2's gaming environment anymore. I remember having 6 - 10 friends over at my house nearly every Friday and Saturday night to play PS2 games together (4 of us at a time, obviously) and it was the best thing ever. Until X-Box Live came along.
Once that happened, playing with your friends took on a whole new meaning. We're global now. We gather in our own living rooms, 20 or so at a time and duke it out for online supremacy. The advent of the NXE is the next evolution of this. Netflix (which I will agree needs more new releases on the XBox) is an awesome addition to the experience. I love it, my wife loves it. It is something else that we can do together, just hanging out some nights.
My PS3 (like so many others, I presume) has been relegated to the purpose for which I actually bought it - SUPER Blu-Ray Player. It has direct access to the Internet at all times, so BD Live is accessible, it downloads firmware updates, it gives you new content for movies sometimes. It has Tru-HD sound and full-blown 7.1 surround for movies that support it. I love it as the movie playing centerpiece of my entertainment system. It does a magnificent job in that respect. That having been said, I do appreciate and see the differences between the up-scaled DVD and the 1080p Blu-Ray picture. If I couldn't tell the difference in my house, I wouldn't buy Blu-Ray movies.
When you want to watch a movie, you have other options (especially if you are not a Blu-Ray snob as I have, admittedly, become). You can put a DVD in your 360, turn on Cable, watch a Netflix movie over XBL (and even invite some friends to join you online and make fun of it, Mystery Science Theater 3000 style).
In short Dan, as a gamer - stick with your 360. Its a beautiful game system, and it has that (normally) pretty green ring that you can visualize is wrapped around you in a warm green hug. Its saying thank you for your faith in me, I won't let you down, join me, play your games and together we will rule the online gaming universe!

I totally agree with you. There games just don't intrest me a lot, and I don't really give a crap about blu-ray. why would I want to watch how they made the movie and the movie at the the same time. Like if I was watching Spiderman 3 I would be like " wow how did he do that?!!! Oh. hm.... They used a green screen." Isn't the point of watching a movie to imagine it was real?

You probably don't need one Dan. I had one I bought from Costco - and over a 9 month period, I used it to play games once or twice, and it otherwise only served as my Blu-Ray player. I finally decided I would be better off just sticking with my 360, and then I returned my PS3 to Costco - purchased a Sony BD player, and pocketed $320 in the process. Believe me, if you buy it, you will most likely only use it to play movies.

I own both consoles and love them both for many reasons. Obviously Blu-Ray was a selling point for the PS3 but many of the IP's I have been playing that will carryover onto the PS3 such as Ratchet & Clank and while some of the older titles for the PS3 do not have Trophies the newer titles, Little Big Planet included, do have them and while they do not work on the point system like Achievements do you still get that same little feeling when it pops up in the corner letting you know you have done something special. Just like achievements do trophies add a level of re-playability to the game, when done correctly, that might otherwise not exist.
In terms of a Blu Ray player though you can buy one for a bit cheaper these days but can that Blu Ray player play any games? It seems that for a small bit more getting the added functionality is well worth it.
MGS4 is a great game but I understand that not all titles are for everyone, I personally do not care for some titles out there. However your comments on Little Big Planet, you really have to give it a go. It looks juvenile I agree but when you first dress out your "Sackboy" and start running, jumping and swinging you find yourself lost in a 6 hour session quickly and then when you finish the game (not sure how long it takes as I am still going) you can either create your own levels or log in and play some of the most amazing levels out there by other gamers making it one of the few titles out there well worth the investment. For myself the price of the PS3 was well worth the Blu-Ray player, Ratchet & Clank Future and Little Big Planet. 2 great games, and I am not a platformer enthusiast by any means, on a well built console.
Aside from that if you are a PSP owner, as I am, you can use the PSP in some games as a rear view mirror, controller and even to watch movies online that are stored on your PS3 while you are away. Nothing like watching Office Space while I am on the road!
Add to that the browser on board, although not a great one, as well if you want to add HDD space it is as simple as changing the SATA drive out yourself. It takes 20-30 minutes tops, even a novice can do this and when done you can install another OS on the PS3 if you so choose allowing you to use it as a "PC" if you like.
My only beef with owning multiple consoles is there are that many more games I have not gotten to yet and every day I wake is one more day behind I am on getting caught up. Thankfully I am retired and can devote a good deal of my already short attention span to playing my beloved consoles. That is when I can wrest them from my wife and kids...

I agree with Dan and the fable2 guy below. First off, I feel the same way Dan does about PS3. I want one, but I don't see a reason for me to own one over 360. The list of games are games that are already on the 360 and like this fable guy below said, there's only three games that everyone drools over on PS3 (MGS 4, Little Big Planet, and Resistance).
I also agree that I am sick and tired of everyone craving over those three games when several games we have are way better on 360.

I don't own a PS3 but all my friends do. I'm the odd one out with my gaming system. Anyway I do think that having a PS3 as well would be good. It's online system is free, even if it's not as good as Live and three exclusives annoy me. Resistance (fall of man and 2), LittleBigPlanet (which is amazing by the way) and MGS4 (rumored to be coming to 360, woo!). I don't give a toss about Motorstorm. If it was as cheap as a 360 I would definitely buy one but I won't pay almost $500 for an extra 3 games. Hope I helped.

As a long time fan of Sony's Playstation and PS2 (well, pre XBox anyway), I've often been left wondering the same thing as Dan. Do I really want to go buy a second gaming system? The answer is no, and here's why:
*There's only one game on the PS3 that really and truly excited me: Uncharted. Everything else I can either play on my 360 or don't care to play.
*If a game comes out for both systems, I'll want it for 360 more, just because of achievements and gamerscore.
*After playing with both Live and Playstation Network, Live is a far superior service. It doesn't really bother me that I have to pay for live and PSN is a free service. Live is just better.
*I've wanted a Blu-Ray player, but when I ask myself if I want to spend $29.99 per movie instead of $15.00, the Blu-Ray angle falls flat on its face.
*There are a ton of games I love on PS2, but the new PS3s can't play them.
In the end, I'm just not left with much of an argument that a PS3 would be worth it.

I own both the PS3 and 360. I have always played my 360 more then my PS3. I only buy movies that I really really like on Blu-Ray, like 300, All the Alien vs Predator movies and of course The 5 Blu-Ray Disc Blade Runner.
The HUGE PLUS is that I bought the 60 Gig model that is 100% compatible with all PS2 games. I am still enjoying persona 3,4, eternal poison, God of War 2, Odin Sphere, Kingdom Hearts, and of course all the Final Fantasy's.
I love the option of downloading games and putting them on my PSP. I also love downloading movies and putting them on my PSP to go! Something I still don't understand why Zune has not hooked up to the 360 for!
To be honest though, if a game was available on both systems I was buying them for the 360, as I hate a mandatory install on games. But, now, since my RROD on my 360 baby, I am buying new games on my PS3 until I get my 360 baby back.
I will tell you this, I like the Cross media bar and interface much better on the PS3 then this whole NXE...I am really starting to dislike the NXE.
With speculation that in April 2009 the PS3 will have a $100.00 price drop, you may be really tempted to get one then, and maybe you should wait till then.
I am loving Resistance 2 on my PS3 and can't wait for the PSP Resistance to come out, so I can enjoy their inter-connectivity, but that game may not be your cup of tea? Though I really do think the PSP and PS3 compliment each other, but if you don't own the PSP then that point is mute.
So there are things you are missing, but it is hard to compare the PS3 with the 360 in anything other then games...The PS3 kind of goes one direction while the 360 goes another. The only real trump PS3 holds right now, is the PSP, a few exclusive games, and Blu-Ray...and at its current price point, might not be worth it..but come April 2009...it should become quite a bit more attractive if the price does indeed fall by $100.00.
Hope that Helps?

I am a proud owner of both consoles, although I only bought the PS3 as a Blu-Ray player (and so I can play Lemmings!). I am obsessed with achievements, so I find myself feeling completely unmotivated to play any games on the PS3. Trophies are just not as cool.

I totallly agree with you. I am in the same boat. Some geek cravings keep me interested in the PS3...blue ray keeps the craving alive...But the cost of the game system and the lack of games I want to play that I can not get on 360 keep my wallet closed.
KillZone 2 may change all that and I do want to try the Motor storms and Resistance's. (Dirt and Baja edge of control are great but I am looking for a casual arcade off road game.)
another set of red rings would make it my third and may prompt a switch to PS3 as well as the opportunity for free on line gaming without "Halo Clones" on line is attractive.
But for now Xbox360 is the system of choice.
I have nearly every system in the past without hesitation until PS3.
And the fact that not every PS3 in the market place is backward compatible, this is a big issue for me as I have some PS2 games I enjoy and do not want to set up another system just to play them. granted I trhink this capability is more mental than real as there are only so many hours available to game.
remember...reality sucks.

I am a Nintendo fanboy through and through. I have always thought the best system ever was the N64. I bought a Gamecube and was pretty satisfied with that (I know now though that it was pretty bad aside from certain titles). I hated the original xbox but loved playing games on the PS2 at friends houses. So when I first heard about the controller format of the Wii I promised myself I would get the PS3 as my next generation console. So I waited until it came close to coming out and I did my research. I decided to wait until after its release to decide if I would buy one. I was very disappointed with the system when I saw its launch and its games. So eventually I decided to get a xbox 360 since the PS3 seemed like a disappointment and the Wii looked like trash(I think its genius now). My xbox red ringed a few months ago and lazy me has yet to send it in. It takes only a couple weeks to fix, so I don't see why its a deciding factor for some. Anyway, I have always kept my eye on the playstation 3 to see if it becomes worth it but so far I have been unimpressed. I personnally don't like MGS4 either, played it and was angry over how disappointed I was. LittleBigPlanet looks awesome, but I play Wii games and Banjo 3 to please my inner child. Shooters are fun but there are so many that it really doesn't matter if you don't pick one up. My opinion is for 360 owners the only appeal for having a PS3 is that if you absolutelly want an exclusive game for it, then you'll be able to get it and play it. Other than that in my opinion it would be like having an inferior xbox 360(trophies and online wise), inferior pc, and piece of modern art rolled into one.

hammerclawpc/ The old 360s are like small space heaters; they get incredibly hot, and take at least a half hour to cool once off. I've had some small experience with the system, having owne five different units--counting all the replacement units I've been through. Well, I just purchased one of the new "Jasper" 360s, and it's a completely different story. It doesn't get hot, it gets warm, not very warm....just warm. Five minutes after turning it off, it's cool. If heat is mostly the reason for RRoD, the problem may be mostly solved.

I have had the 360 since early 2006 and the PS3 (an older 80gb for backwards compatability) from 2007. I have been online gaming since 1991 with BBSs and 1996 with Warcraft II.
With that said I have 5 games for my PS3 and about 45 for my 360. I really like the 360 more due to the online gaming and networking with friends all over the world. The new Netflix has a lot of promise, but needs more current releases.
PSN has a long way to go. Sony has improved their interface, but HOME is still a beta and needs a lot of work to find friends easier. I do not need a world outside of my own world... it's too busy as it is.
Blu-ray is great. It is better than 1080p upscaled DVDs (really more for current releases). I was an early adopter for HD-DVD, so I still use mine for my 30 HD DVDs and to save the drive on my 360.
So, I should be bitter from the whole format war, but for gaming I would stick with 360. For movies, there is no choice for high-def. Get a Blu-ray player or a PS3.

No it has nothing to do with the speed or quality of the internet connection.
LIVE service is available in some countries only.
It is written on the back of the cover of every single game you buy,you may need a magnifying glass to read it though

jmchris: is that broadband issue? Xbox live is broadband only. PSN is not.

Your Xboxes get burnt, busted,RRoded and you choose it over the PS3?
The moment mine dies i will ask for a refund or else sue them.
I bought it 3 months ago after reading among others about the superior online experience. There was a big "XBOX LIVE"on the box and on the cover of every single game i bought.
What the salesperson forgot to tell me was that "LIVE" was not supported in my country.Out of 195 countries only 26 support the superior live experience. And Ukraine has PSN thank you very much

I'm one of those PS3/360 owners. I bought it a) for bluray and b) for exclusives (warhawk, MGS4 (which i hate) and LBP). I've found that it sits there and does nothing. When my 360 was busted, i forgot that i had a PS3 to play games on, it had been so long. My wife actually reminded me (and if you knew how crazy that is you'd appreciate that more). I rented Little Big Planet, and had a blast. Broke out warhawk and had lots of fun. It really started to hurt when i rented games i have played or own on 360. The PS3's controller is significantly inferior, and the games didn't look....right. But honestly, my main concern with the PS3 is it's apparent lack of common sense. You have to navigate through so many odd menus (the NXE has the same problem), and EVERY single thing I do on that PS3 requires me to download from some apparently rusty server in the Ukraine (based on the speed of said downloads). Not only that slap in the face, but THEN i have to apply the download which can take as long if not longer. Why this on the PS3 and not the Xbox? The Xbox does similar things, but much more efficiently. And you don't have to install your downloads.
PS3 just seems cumbersome, and I cannot see any reason to choose it over the 360. I'm not a MS fanboy, i've owned and had all systems I can think of. I'm a fanboy of videogames.

As I write this I await the arrival of my xbox 360 back from repair. It was supposed to be delivered by 2 pm today, but is now a little over 2 hours past that. But that is besides the point.
I definitely want to get a ps3. The problem is that it is too expensive. This places it on my "eventually" list. I debate the pros and cons of getting a ps3. The reasons I should and the reasons I shouldn't. I have no doubt I will get one. It may not be for a while though. Without a price drop it will be even longer.

Instead of rooting through the numerous replies that are bound to be chalk full of snark and cheekiness, I shall instead deign to impart my own thoughts on this exact same question.
I think what it all comes down to my old friend Dan, is what you will use it for. I as well don't much care for the gamut of games that abound the PS3's shores. With the exception of MGS4, which I would like to play, there's not enough enticement to win me over on that front.
The blueray component however has had my interest ever since this time last year when the hd-dvd drive I had received for Christmas that year was abandoned to the halls of electronic what-ifs.
Matched with an hdtv, new release movies that are made with it in mind are just mind-numbingly awesome.
Although with the bane of it's aforementioned competition, the price line of most standard blueray players are half the cost of the ps3...
So, I guess in the end I would have to agree. A simple $199 Players beats the $399 price tag of the sony behemoth. Unless of course the lite-on (which is Sony btw) 360 attachments come out before next year.

Mr Amrich asked whether he should get a PS3 not which console is better.
He has already said he owns an Xbox 360.
And to all you guys that are on the third or fourth Xbox cause of the RROD and happy about it
shame on you

I was in the same place as Dan, here. I am a proud owner of a 360, and I absolutely love it. It was my first non-Playstation system. I had the two older siblings of the ps3, and loved them. The MGS games are probably my favorite Sony franchise, and I needed 4 to finish my collection. So, withdrawing a hefty chunk of my bank account, I set out to buy a ps3 for MGS4, if nothing else. So, $600 later, there i was, finally playing my long lusted after game. I played and beat it. Then I had a problem. There were absolutely NO other games i wanted to play. If there were, it was most likely that I could just play the better version on my 360. Oh how the mighty have fallen. I gave Unreal Tournament 3 a chance, and i have to say, what a let-down PSOnline is, especially coming from Xbox Live. Sony may boast that it's free, but in this case, you truly get what you pay for. I mean, come on. Only a few games support in-game chat, rendering my purchase of a $40 headset pointless; other than pacing around my room, seemingly shouting to myself as i struggle to make my best impersonation of an on-the-go lawyer type, with a bluetooth, who is just too busy to hold a phone like a normal person. So, long story short, I ended up selling it not more than five months after I bought it. The only thing that I can think of that would even make me consider wanting one is the fact that it is a pretty affordable Blu-Ray player. Sad, but true. Well, Dan, I hope this helps in aiding your decision. Good luck!

I own Xbox 360, and i while back i got the red ring, and after i sent it to get repaired. I thought i have the money now, Ill get a PS3 (i had been thinking about getting one). I use my Xbox MUCH more,I barely use PS3 online (horrible connection compaired to Xbox, At lest for me.) AND i would rather b able to use the Marketplace points rather then a card over PS3 to get my DLC. OH one more thing about system problems, MY PS3 BROKE TWO DAYS AFTER I GOT IT, TWO DAYS.

Trophies will at some point become analogous to Achievements once they're more ubiquitous.
I already have a friend who is a trophy whore :-P
In any case, Sony technically has the more powerful machine (although not by as much as they like to claim). It doesn't really matter; I thought that the best looking game of the last generation was God of War II, which was released on the not-so-technically impressive PS2.
Home, for the moment, is a piece of garbage. Even if it gets better I'm not going to use it.
The online service is very good. Not spectacular like Live, but still good.
However, for all of you, even Mr. Amrich, if you don't want to spend the cash on the PS3, go to a friend who has and play little big planet. If your inner child is not completely dead, you will smile.

ok lemme add on to my previous comment
your a fanboy urself FreakyFrequency
:(
and its all about people's individual preferences
if you favor the 360 be my guest, but this is just way , i mean wayy out of hand
playstation might not have a large amount of exclusives, but who cares? the 360 has been out a year early before the wii and ps3 came into play
so devlepers had pleanty of time to devlop xbox exclusives
the 360 is , im serious a peice of junk, im talking about the hardware, not the games
the games are awsome :D but this is what happens when you rush a consle into the store shelfs
here is a little demnstration about just how "durable" the 360 actaully is
the original xbox was a tank, so much more durable then this..

if you havn't noticed.. but
the ps3 has achievents now, the "trophy system"
I think you should google it up sometime :)
playstation home.. mirosoft start using it to have conference meetings like in 2nd life
I don't see the 360 have any virtual world, only avatars made by rare...
and really this consle flame war is just ridicutlous..
plus ps3 has free online, not like for microsoft, who loves to rip ppl off of their money
sucks xD

Microsoft has got the biggest and best EXCLUSIVES of all 3 next-gen game machines
(wii,PS3 and Xbox360) ...
I see no reason why I should buy a PS3
- no achievements
- sony's Home online service is nowhere near the same quality and quantity that XBOXLIVE delivers and offers
- Microfoft has got secured the best and biggest game-exclusives for years to come
- Games likes Mass Effect ,halo ,Gears of War, left4dead are found ONLY on xbox, which of course are all games that people buy an xbox for ... we cant say the same for sony's weak exclusive line-up !!
- Japanese game devellopers are slowly abandoning the PS3 .. due to the fact that PS3 hardware is extremely complexe , it's much easier develloping a game for the XBOX360 than it is for the PS3
It's funny I recently went to best buy after christmas and I asked the salesguy which machine sold the most (Xbox360 or PS3) , pretending to be shopping for either system and he said : Xbox360 sells more but the PS3 is better ! I asked him if he was a sony player and he said yes ..
he said : PS3 has got blu-ray ,xbox does'nt
I said : so what I'm buying a game machine not a DVD player
he said : Home is free but you have to pay for Xbox live
I said : yes but the the trouble with Home is that anybody can hack and get in to your PS3 since it's free ... xboxlive is well protected and the content-quality surpasses Home by a mile
he said : PS3 has better graphics
I said : technically both machines are pretty equal spec wise
He said : PS3 has got MGS4 and GTurismo
I said : but there is more games and exclusives on 360 like gears , halo, mass effect etc ...
by the time we were through the salesman was so discouraged he stoped trying convincing me to but a PS3 he just left and went away telling me that the xbox360 is a faulty product (redringofdeath) and that there waranty sucks ....
Typical fanboy ------- I am never buying a PS3 in my life - It's not worth it spending my 400$ when I can use that money to buy the next xbox720 or xbox 4 !!!
