Alone in the Dark
WORDS BY: Francesca Reyes
You want to like the supernaturaltinged Central Park thriller Alone in the Dark. You really, really do. It’s got all the makings of an intriguingly cinematic romp in the survival-horror hay. First, there’s a super-interesting item-combo system that gives you the choice: Do I use the doublesided sticky tape with a pack of bullets on a bottle of hooch to construct a grenade bomb? Or do I use the tape to smack a glow stick to a bottle of first-aid spray just for the hell of it? The choices are endlessly intoxicating — something that mashing together green and red herbs in Resident Evil always stopped short of accomplishing.
There’s also the lure of using the game’s mega-flammable environments to eliminate fire-finicky enemies, who’ll otherwise keep after you without a flame-y fatality move. Immolate ’em with a doused chair! Toss a self-constructed bomb at them, then light it up with either a Zippo or a well-timed bullet! The possibilities just ooze out of Alone in the Dark’s seemingly free-wheeling pores. Add to all this clever liberty cars that require a little hotwiring mini-game, and occasional puzzles that rely more on glorious real-world wit (and physics) than merely having the correct red/blue/green key, and you get the sense that the team behind Alone in the Dark was on the right track with its ambitions.
Yet our admiration for what the game tries to do (and sometimes succeeds at) doesn’t always match up with the complete package it presents. The most fundamental hurdle for any game is its control system, and Alone in the Dark’s rigid third-person camera and stiff character-handling cripple what could’ve been an amazingly fluid adventure. Swapping between third-person shooting and first-person shooting feels jarring and disorienting — even after playing the game for hours. With this many reanimated creeps hot for your spilled blood, these control hiccups pull you out of the experience faster than realizing the fact that every enemy in the game has a name that ends in a “Z” (humanz, ratz, vampirz). Really.
Sure, you may get used to the controls over time, but why should you have to? A learning curve is fine, but not at the expense of gameplay. Even the driving segments feel hard to control. This becomes crucial in the rare but important chase sequences, which are made all the more blood-boiling by the lack of frequent checkpoints.
Maybe we’re just bitter. There’s so much lovely intelligence lurking under Alone in the Dark’s hamstrung, occasionally glitchy surface (unforgivably, we found a few crash bugs in even the retail version!) that it’s hard to let this one go quietly into the night. We certainly appreciate its laudable ambitions, but we’re hard-pressed to recommend this uneven experience to anyone without the stamina to bite, scratch, and claw their way to uncovering its inventive charms.

this game is alright but definitely not worth the buy. I got all 1000 points in less than 5 days while renting it. The part that'll really grind your gears is in the very first car chase where the citys falling apart. When you drive into the mall and up the escalator you go flying through a big window. Theres nothing wrong with any of that until you realize that the ground below glitches out and you just fall to your death. I seriously had to play this part about twenty times to get the achievement for driving all the way in first person which is where this terrible glitch happens the most.

I too had high expectations for this game. Oh well, I guess I'll just rent it just to see if it was as bad as everyone is making out to be.

I would give this game a 7, a 7.5 if it had battle control. But I have to admit, I am almost done with epsiode 3 and the controls are starting to feel a little bitter.
I do disagree with the comment about the driving. I think it works really well. If you can drive a GTA 4 can then you can drive any kind of car. And the drive to Central Park was one of the best moments in the game. I died a lot and had to retry all the way from the begining but I enjoyed it everytime. I still go back and replay.
I want to tell people to go out and buy this game but I think they should give it a rent! If just to experience the drive to Central Park cause you will either be amazed or be pulling your hair out.

Also gametrailers.com gave it a 7.3 out of 10 and IGN gave it a 3.5 out of 10 so if you're thinking about buying this game you should definately rent it first. It all comes down to personal taste really (as do all games).

I was once anticipating this greatly. Sadly, it turned out to be crap. This crap isn't even worth playing for Achievements. It's probably that bad, but it's still sad to see a unique game fall into a dark pit and die. Oh well. At least Bourne Conspiracy was decent.

This game looked really interesting when I watched all the diaries on the Marketplace. It's too bad every site and person is saying it sucks. I will play it one day but won't buy it.

Sad, Atari was really relying on this game to make a come back for them, but with scores like this everywhere they might get the oppisite of what they wanted.
