3-on-3 NHL Arcade

WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

"Welcome to…NHL Jam!” We wouldn’t have been the least bit surprised had an announcer shouted those words when we started up 3-on- 3 NHL Arcade. This tongue-in-cheek offshoot of EA’s core NHL sim is a smooth zamboni ride that mixes goofy gameplay with razor-sharp control, just as NBA Jam did when it pioneered this genre over 15 years ago.

Borrowing the NHL 09 engine, 3-on-3 employs the same immaculate thumbstick-based controls in a short-rink, three-on-three setting. Loosening up the action are a total lack of rules as well as crazy power-ups like Rocket Shot, Dominator, and Mini Goalie. Though it’s fun to battle for the puck — even in ranked mode online — 3-on-3 lives up to its name perhaps too literally: there’s just one mode here, with no seasons, instant replays, or other extras. Instead, 3-on-3 firmly maintains the mindset of “insert coin to continue.” And even though it lacks any frills, we think we’ll do just that.

On Xbox Live Arcade
7.0
  • Fun core gameplay built off of the NHL 09 engine.
  • Doesn’t take itself seriously.
  • It’s pretty barebones, with just one mode, no replay feature, and so on.
  • Where are the fights?
COMMENTS:

I agree, this one did not have as many features. It was fun but not something I would play every day. play blackjack play blackjack online play roulette play craps play slots play poker play casino games play bingo play cell phone casino games play mobile casino games make money online

I Dl'd the demo n then bought the full game.. within days. It's alot of fun and IT IS WHAT IT IS, although I was disapointed about the amount of players/teams,or lack the of! That was kinda stupid, BUT a 7 is fair but I would give it an 8, it's fun fast paced hockey when you don't have enough time to play nhl 09 (or if your not a big hockey fan, like me and dont wanna buy nhl 09, although i am a hockey VIDEO GAME fan, i also have 09.) All n all i think the game would be fun for anyone, the sounds alone are funny as hell, not to mention the crushing hits, and easy gameplay, it's def. worth the dl price, the online play is pretty sick, i love makin the opposing goalie look like a fool after i complete a nasty spining trickshot!

I played the demo and it was quite enjoyable I will probably get the game and i think a 7 is fair, but i personally would have given it a 8.
