R-Type Dimensions
WORDS BY: Dan Amrich
R-Type Dimensions developer Tozai could have just dumped the old code of side-scrolling shooters R-Type and R-Type II onto XBLA, and been done with it. Thankfully, someone realized what retro reissues like this should be: the ultimate version of old-school charm with modern gaming’s charisma and convenience.

Both original coin-ops are here in their entirety, and if you want to try to beat them on three lives each in all their pixelated glory, go to town — it’s still one of the toughest side-scrolling shmups around. But we opted for kinder, gentler infinite continues while we fiddled with the graphical updates. Various video filters and camera options give you the chance to play in 3D with a tilted playfield, inside a rendered coin-op machine (complete with control panel), or as if the whole thing were running on an NES or SNES console (which isn’t always pretty). It’s the same game engine underneath, so you can play pixel-dress-up, switching between video modes at will.

Once you settle into a look you like, the game proves just as punishing as ever. As Bydo Empire aliens attack from all around in claustrophobic corridors, you’ll need the Force — a sphere that fires extra attacks and can ram enemies — almost as much as you’ll need a co-op copilot (couch or Live, your choice). You might fail to see what all the fuss is about if you’re not a shmup historian, but for the faithful it’s a pleasure to rediscover R-Type with friends and flash.
