Mega Man 9

WORDS BY: Cameron Lewis

From its quirky mechanical enemies to its strident strains of deliciously lo-fi music, this run-and-gun platformer honors the 8-bit era. As usual with this renowned series, you’ll negotiate tricky jumping puzzles, spend screws on energy reserves and extra lives, and defeat bosses to add their offbeat special attacks to your arsenal. Of course, every world’s packed with instant-death obstacles and checkpoints are few, so just reaching those leaders demands the patience of a saint. Mega Man 9 is one of the better games in the series, and this $10 adventure tickles the right retro pressure points; but whether you enjoy its perverse trials or run screaming will depend mostly on your tolerance for its brutally punishing difficulty.

  • Brings back the memories.
  • Tricky puzzles and challenging bosses...
  • ...can be too tricky and challenging for the not-so-hardcore retro gamer.
  • Why does the Proto Man add-on cost another $2? Thanks, Capcom.
COMMENTS:

Yea were we pansies back then or just very hardcore. This game kicked my ass and then spit me out. There's just way more options now so sorry mega man.

True, the 4:3 aspect ratio might throw some people off... but this is hardly the game to buy if you're looking to show off widescreen HDTV glory. It's all about reliving the NES days of youth... right down to breaking the controller. ;)

I've beaten and loved all of these past titles. This game however, is plain sadistic. Not quite the experience I remember when I was 15. Also worth mentioning is that the game does not dispay in widescreen. I understand the retro aspect but isn't it supposed to be bad on some HDTVs to not have a full image dispayed?

This game is the devil! It is fun and worth every cent, but it is ever so hard.
