Battlezone

WORDS BY: Cameron Lewis

Minimalistic vector tanks were all the rage in 1980, but they’re more than a little sad in 2008. Retro addicts might enjoy the coin-op’s original vector graphics, but the “evolved” version is a neon mess of non-descript scenery, laughable backgrounds, and inexplicably shallow viewing distance. The controls are serviceable if switched to dual-stick tread control, but few will want to endure more than 10 minutes of dull enemies and spotty collision detection. Meanwhile, the sole online multiplayer mode somehow manages to be even less enjoyable by randomly spawning you as one of several virtually indistinguishable tanks or a hopelessly idiotic kamikaze missile. Unless your nostalgia borders on masochism, let this pointless war rage without you.

On Xbox Live Arcade
3.0
  • Um, wallowing in nostalgia?
  • "Evolved" version is painful to look at; controls, enemies, and collision detection flop.
  • Even multiplayer is a bust.
  • Why, Atari, why?
COMMENTS:

Oh BTW @ Endrzgame, you can play with the Right Trigger as the Fire Button, using Dual Analogue Sticks, maybe the game was patched so that you can now.........Enjoy Mate

@ NBA Kirkland,

LOL you HAD the Top score on this Game on Classic Mode on Normal : 53,000

Now Bow Down to The True King of Battlezone:-

on Easy : 577,000
on Normal : 665,000
on Hard : 273,000

Take a look on XBOX Live Arcade on the Highscore Tables if you don't believe me......

oh and also just because Cameron lewis, was unable to play this game, he scored it low, but i tell you what, this game ROCKS, and i would give it an 8/10........

There is just One Problem with this version, the Enemies Dot on the Radar should be alot Lighter, but apart from that, excellent Conversion.........

One of my favorites as a kid but it's too bad the years haven't been kinder to this title. I think I would have liked this version a little more if I could map the fire button to the right trigger. I prefer the dual-stick control and having to use the A-button to shoot is annoying. Glad I demoed it instead of buying.

At least it is priced right at 400 MS points.

I actually like this game but that is perhaps because I used to play it for hours on one quarter at the local 7-11. The classic mode plays just like the original. You can use all the old tricks you learned in the arcade kill the super tanks and avoid the missiles.

And I currently have the highscore for classic mode, hard difficulty on the Xbox Live Battlezone leaderboard. What's not to like?! :-)
