Asteroids/Asteroids Deluxe

WORDS BY: Steven Simunic

Now that Atari has released the beloved Asteroids (together with its sequel), it’s easy to remember why it’s a classic. While other games of its era have been outclassed by their successors, Asteroids never suffered imitators, in part because its gameplay — simply maneuvering a wedge-shaped spaceship around killer asteroids and spaceships, then blasting them all to hell — was already nearly perfect.

Unfortunately for this Live Arcade version, the game’s “updated” graphics employ bright backgrounds and huge, neon explosions that disorient you after every demolished asteroid. It’s okay, though — you can also play with the old graphics and relive that ’80s charm.

On Xbox Live Arcade
7.0
  • Faithful re-creation of one of the original shooters.
  • Perfect retro graphics.
  • Loud, overly bright noisy backgrounds make the game more "modern." No thanks.
  • Hey Atari, how about a 2600 pack for Live Arcade? We wanna play River Raid and Starmaster and all those!
COMMENTS:

Asteroids was fun for it's time but then it got extremely repetitious and boring. I don't know about this game though since I never played it.play blackjack play blackjack online play roulette play craps play slots play poker play casino games play bingo play cell phone casino games play mobile casino games make money online

Wow, I remember playing this game for hours and hours at my cousins house even though we were already coming into the 3D era of games. Nice to see it on arcade.
