"Something really irks me about people who own a major console and buy maybe a few big-name games a year and that's IT...then call themselves serious gamers. "

Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader?

WORDS BY: Paul Curthoys

I am, but Dan isn’t. Thing is, missing the million-dollar question finale wasn’t really Dan’s fault. When asked “What are goods sent out of the country?”, he typed in “export,” but the game would only accept “exports” as the right answer. That kind of inattention to detail keeps this Arcade conversion from achieving the embarrassingly addictive quality of the hit TV game show. We also saw question repeats almost immediately, and multiplayer felt like it confined friends to playing individual games at the same time, rather than creating that party-game buzz. If you and/or your kid love the show enough to tolerate all that…you should still stick with the infinitely superior XBLA game Wits & Wagers.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Even non-astute readers of our Holiday issue will notice that this game received a 4.5 there. That was because we'd been told that the price was $10...but right before release, the price was jacked up to $15. That's $10 more than this really pretty weak game should cost, so in a fit of righteous outrage, we're correcting our score to reflect the new info.  A correction will also run in the January issue of OXM on the Back Button page.

On Xbox Live Arcade
4.0
  • Just like the show from the Jeff Foxworthy render to the questions.
  • No real party madness.
  • Questions repeat before you even finish with the first round; manually inserted answers very particular.
  • Fifth graders actually know how many atoms are in the compound CaCO3?
COMMENTS:

I'm with you in the insanity of the million dollar question, and the WTF of "how can a 9 year old know this?!" but I really enjoyed the game. I'm a trivia whore and I thought the multiplayer was fun with buds.It didn't blow me away or anything, but I had fun.
