1942: Joint Strike

WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

Capcom’s recent trend of reviving classic coin-ops with updated visuals has been largely successful, but the new 1942 has one too many bulletholes in its wing to remain airborne.

The short Joint Strike — it’s beatable in less than an hour — has you flying through the World War II skies, downing endless waves of foes while dodging countless others. It sports local or online coop — we highly recommend playing it this way — and the visuals have been beautifully modernized, but it’s just too darn difficult, even on the easy “Penguin” setting. We can accept an old-school challenge, but how about a few continues? We paid our $10.

Also annoying is the frequent, noticeable slowdown when a lot of effects start flashing on-screen, particularly during online play. And we wish holding down the A button would continually fire your weapon, but unfortunately, you’ll have to whale on it endlessly, making for a sore right thumb.

On Xbox Live Arcade
6.0
  • Gorgeous presentation.
  • Too hard, even on the easiest of the three difficulties.
  • Pounding the A button is a chore.
  • Where are the continues after a Game Over?
COMMENTS:

I agree that this game is hard, but it was intended to be. When the original came out, it was tough, but not this tough. In order to triumph over the original while still holding onto the classic aspects, the game needed to be more difficult and include the endless A pounding which leaves your thumb swollen after 3 hours.

After the demo, I went ahead and forked out the $10 for this game and haven't been disappointed. The multiplayer experience is all sorts of entertaining, provided that your partner doesn't try to hog all the powerups.

As for not being able to save, it's very frustrating. But as you progress through the game and your skills become fine tuned, there is a certain honor about being victorious, much like earning your achievements the legit way intsead of asking 5 friends to stand in the same spot while you kill them all at the same time.

I would give this game a 7.0, in regards to Xbox Live Arcade games. I think most gamers these days get scared by games which are truly difficult on all levels and want things handed to them. If you're a fan of top-down 2D aerial shooters, this is a must. If you're timid and not familiar with this genre, I'd say try the demo before even considering this purchase. No if only a rendition of Tiger-Heli could be developed... *drools*

Thank you Ryan!
I had downloaded the demo and was excited for a trip down memory lane...but I was a little hesitant to plunk $10 for a classic "coin-op" (a euphemism for quarter-burner). No continues? That is unforgivable. That game was DESIGNED to kill you and suck down more money to get you to finish, unless you have some sort savant-like reflexes....

I will steer clear, unless and until they adjust the game.

ummm, btw, Xbox Live folks...a good price point for anything "classic" remake or not, is $5....I will plunk away 400 points/$5 on just about anything (Warlords anyone?), but up it to 800/$10 and I get A LOT more choosy.
