"Why don't I like Fallout 3? I just am not getting into it. I'm about 4 hours in and I'm supposed to be looking for a radio station. I am taking my time, doing some exploring and really trying to enjoy it. While I'm playing though, all I can think about is wanting to play something else."

Rock Band 2 Cymbal Accessory Kit

WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

Wondering why the back of your Rock Band 2 drum kit has those three colored jacks? Mad Catz has your answer: they’ve produced a stellar, officially licensed Cymbal Kit add-on that’s reasonably priced, easy to install, and adds a lot to your Rock Band 2 experience.

By simply clamping to the underside of the kit’s drum heads (with no tools required), the cymbals allow you to play fast, comfortably, and emphatically, even if the lightweight clamp-and-pole system offers more wobble than we’d like. You’ll have to endure a short learning curve as you re-learn how to play the kit, and we found that the cymbals were a bit loud and “thwacky” for our tastes. But really, our complaints end there. RB2 knows when the cymbals are connected, so you’ll hear different samples in the Drum Trainer section of the game; the cymbals are also velocity-sensitive, meaning the harder you hit, the louder and more aggressive they sound.

The cymbals are available in packs of one ($20), two ($30), or three ($40, which is what we tested); if you’re going to get only one, purchase a crash and plug it into the green jack, to give your Overdrive fills extra flair. These add-ons lend a bit more credibility and flexibility to your fake drumming for a minimal investment — and, of course, they’re just plain more fun.

For Xbox 360
8.5
  • Velocity-sensitive triggers and an extra layer of realism.
  • Easy installation; prices seems very reasonable.
  • Still rather loud when hit, and the mounts are a bit wobbly.
  • Will a double bass pedal add-on be next?

im geting it

i love RB2! its hella great

How is $40 extra on top of a $200 bundle reasonable or $80 for the stand alone drums.

When are these cymbals going on sale? I must have them!!

Yeah I need an opinion on dlc. they haven't posted since the first of the new albums were released over 2 weeks ago.

BLARG! Can I has a sword?

I agree WHERE IS THE DLC REVIEW. Com'on guys I really looked foward to that.

Sounds cool. Expensive though! Especially since the RB2 drums are $90 already. If I didn't want to feel awesome rocking virtual concerts I'd probably by pass this but I can't! I'm hoping it'll help me become an even better drummer (without actually have ever played real drums). Lastly, bring those RB DLC reviews back. I hope you're real busy with some secret DLC on disc, New Xbox Experience or Holiday issue surprises otherwise I'm simply dissapointed in you guys.

Sweet article, but where the hell is the weekly reviews of new downloadable content for ROCK BAND. I always jumped on OXM for the latest news every Thursday and now it kinda just fell off the face of the tubes right around the time that Rush's album was delayed. What gives OXM!?!?!

This looks cool, the only problem is they forgot about left handed drummers. There is no red port in the back, meaning we can't have a crash cymbal (red is crash for lefties). Unless harmonix patches the game to recognize the green port differently in lefty mode, then we are just out of luck. The same is true for the Ion drum rocker, the cymbals do not work properly for lefties, what a gross oversight on the part of harmonix.
