Iron Man

WORDS BY: Matt Cabral

This latest movie-tied title begins with a bang as billionaire a-hole-turned-
metal-clad-menace Tony Stark immediately brings the pain to packs of Middle Eastern baddies. Suited up in an early, flamethrower-equipped version of his ass-whuppin’ armor, you’ll toast terrorists and explode barrels (of course) in a blaze of giddy glory. Things get even better when you equip the red-and-gold Mark III flying suit and zip around large levels, cranking the afterburners and firing repulsor rays everywhere.

But then, as the game reaches its midpoint, repetitive missions and aggravating boss encounters begin to sap the seat-of-your-pants fun. Objectives too often include taking out multiple weapon caches, weapon-carrying convoys, weapons-of-mass-destruction, and so on — and then taking on an overpowered military vehicle or beefed-up bad guy. The former is fun at first, but the buzz-killing bosses chaotically bombard you with projectiles from all directions, frequently leaving you dead and stuck restarting the entire monotonous mission. There are definitely a few popcorn thrills to be had, but Iron Man’s me-too missions and unbalanced boss battles ultimately leave it grounded.

  • Controlling Iron Man is pretty good fun…
  • …until the uneven difficulty starts to demand too much precision.
  • Repetitive mission structure.
  • Not to get all TMI...but how does he pee in that suit?
COMMENTS:

You forgot how Achievements pour out more consistently then the difficulty

I enjoyed the game for what it is a movie license title. So my expectation for greatness is definitely in check. With that said I would pick it up as a rental. Controlling Iron Man is a good time and some of the suits you unlock along the way are fun as well. As far as actual gameplay I was surprised by the lack of options in a non-linear battlefield. Also, the types of enemies became very repetitive. And I agree on the difficulty level. From an achievement standpoint I was able to pull 850 in about 7 hours of play so it is rich from that perspective. Although you need to focus on the type of achievement as they are not tied to completion of levels but rather tasks and objectives within the missions.

Have fun!!!

Hmmm, i tried to download the game but my download kept on getting paused so i need some awesome reviews, i dont know whether to get it for xbox or for wii.

With all due respect to X-Box and my readers,

Yeah, I was definitely unimpressed with the demo. I thought the patter was cute, nice and sardonic - but I'm pretty sure it would get aggravating over time. I hated flying the most, tho'; It was exhilarating
the first couple of times you caught air - then it got annoying due to the hyperactive camera. I spent most of the demo running around the place, only using flying to cover long distances. Then it was simply too easy (and that's saying a LOT coming from me!). Very flat.

Good thing the MOVIE got everything just about right...

really not surprised, 95% of official movie games are terrible, i only clicked on this review to see how bad the rating is. lolololooooolllllooo!

You know...I think you may have meant "From Fun to Frustrating at MACH speed"...not mark...makes no sense. And the demo was fun for about 20 seconds, so I can only imagine how terribly boring the full-game was.
