Dreamkiller
WORDS BY: Cameron Lewis
Wrestling with some psychological scars? Send Alice Drake into your noggin with a mini-gun and kiss ’em goodbye. The chick with the heavy artillery and fire-starting hands is in for a shock, though: something sinister is marshalling the snakes, robots, demons, and whatnot toward some greater purpose.

In Dreamkiller’s mad blast of frenzied combat, some of the game’s creative arenas respawn until you kill a marked leader, and you’ll need to phase into the blur-o-vision parallel world of the subconscious via portals to kill otherwise unassailable beasties. Even so, this twitch action is repetitive as hell. Luckily, it’s also addictively entertaining in the same breathless, overpopulated way as Serious Sam, even if the premise cries out for more than plain old deathmatch, capture-the-flag, and hold-the-point multiplayer.

Polish is definitely lacking at times — some narrow platforms seem coated with butter, and only a few tricky bosses demand any thought. But Dreamkiller’s controls are tight, the action is frenzied, and, at $40, the price is right.

I actually liked Serious Sam unlike most people. This could be a great game but I never heard of it before, naturally.
