AC/DC Live: Rock Band Track Pack

WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey

When “Let There Be Rock” was the song chosen for AC/DC’s long-awaited music-game debut in Rock Band 2, we suspected it meant that the bigger hits would be downloadable later on. We were half-right.

Sadly, AC/DC Live is a $40 disc-only add-on pack — it includes 250 Achievement points, and you can export it once to Rock Band and Rock Band 2. It’s sold only at Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club, you don’t get AC/DC band-member avatars or other extras as you did in Guitar Hero: Aerosmith, and it’s built off of the Rock Band engine — meaning no online play or Make-A-Setlist unless you export it.

Don’t get us wrong: these tracks are a blast to play — particularly Angus Young’s guitar and Brian Johnson’s vocals — and they rank alongside The Best of the Who as Rock Band’s greatest supplemental tunes. “Thunderstruck,” “T.N.T.,” and “Highway to Hell” are just three of the 18 stellar cuts, while a 10-plus-minute “Jailbreak” is an epic concert piece. But it’s still a letdown. If only this had been packaged with more goodies or delivered digitally for a more reasonable price…

On Xbox 360
7.0
  • Absolutely classic rock songs...
  • ...Delivered in the worst possible way.
  • No extras whatsoever.
  • Why can't we just download this pack?
COMMENTS:

I dunno. I actually enjoyed this one from AC/DC. Maybe it just because I'm such a big fan of theirs...

Love the music AC/DC but some of the game features flopped here. play blackjack play blackjack online play roulette play craps play slots play poker play casino games play bingo play cell phone casino games play mobile casino games make money online

I guess I'll go ahead and clear everything up. You might not like the way these songs were distributed, but there was literally no other choice.

AC/DC is ridiculously hard to work with. They believe in the album format, which is why they have not put their songs on itunes. If they were to put these songs up for download, it would be easy to download a single song, something that goes completely against AC/DC's policy.

However, it would be possible to make it an all or nothing download, similar to Death Magnetic, right? Wrong. Here, something else comes into play... AC/DC's deal with Walmart. Basically, AC/DC signed a deal with Walmart, making their new album exclusive to that store. Apparently, the same has to follow.

This presents Harmonix with a problem. They want to get AC/DC on the game, but with these problems, they can't use their own methods. They want all of their hits... but they can't make a Who-style greatest hits, because that goes against AC/DC's policy. This was the only way to get all of their hits.

As for price... chalk that up to Walmart.

I'm personally hoping for an AC/DC track pack 2, featuring Bon Scott on vocals. Live in Paris would be good.

where are our music dlc reviews? you never reviewed. the presidents of the united states or foo fighters dlc. pick up the slack oxm!

Just to comment on the Wal-Mart/Sams Club thing. That only applies in the United States, in Canada you can buy the album and the track pack at the usual places. Im not really sure why they couldnt just make this a downloadable pack but at least we finally have some kick ass ACDC tunes to play.

It's not just at Sam's Club/Wal-mart. I work part-time at EB Games and we have it in stock.

Even with what the guy below me just said, there is no way in hell I'm paying $40 for 18 songs.

That's just ridiculous.

The reason it was delivered the way it was delivered is for two reasons:

1) AC/DC currently has a crazy licensing deal with Wal-Mart/Sams Club. The new album is only being sold there, they've got a whole "AC/DC" section in every store, and in the deal, it's stipulated that any new material AC/DC puts out for a while (merchandise or otherwise) must be sold at the store (with the curious exception of concert shirts and tickets, which are as pricey as ever). Thus, the pack can only be sold at Wal-Mart.

2) So why a track pack and not just straight DLC? AC/DC has said themselves that they prefer to release their content as full albums, not as singles: I was shocked when a lone AC/DC track made it into Rock Band 2. Thus, it makes sense that a full concert would only be released as a disc, the way AC/DC wants it. If they released it in the store, they would have had to not offer it as singles, and this would go against the current format of the store. People would ignore quite a few songs (Hell Ain't A Bad Place To Be, Jailbreak, Fire Your Guns, Heatseeker, there are at least three more that aren't really huge hits), and the amount HMX paid to get the songs wouldn't pay off in the end.

That last bit was conjecture, but everything else is explained in this article.
