Guitar Hero: Van Halen
WORDS BY: Dan Amrich

If you can play “Eruption” on Expert…well, you’re better than us. Eddie Van Halen’s instrumental opus was one of just four tracks playable in our early version of Guitar Hero: Van Halen, and its flurry of hammer-ons stalled us at just 11%. Developed by the company formerly known as Z-Axis, GHVH appears to share more in common with World Tour than with the smoother-animated GH5, but it’s clear from personal touches (like Eddie’s funny sideways shuffle) that the band was mo-capped for the occasion. Like the Aerosmith and Metallica Guitar Hero games before it, this one will mix Van Halen songs with “special guests” like Killswitch Engage, Queen, and Weezer, and it supports full-band play, so if everybody wants some, they can get some. That worked as well as it ever has, but…well, we couldn’t pull off David Lee Roth’s vocal wails on Expert, either.
