"Why don't I like Fallout 3? I just am not getting into it. I'm about 4 hours in and I'm supposed to be looking for a radio station. I am taking my time, doing some exploring and really trying to enjoy it. While I'm playing though, all I can think about is wanting to play something else."

Aliens: Colonial Marines

WORDS BY: Chuck Osborn

It’s been nearly 30 years since the first Alien movie scared the bejeezus out of moviegoers, and the series is still slithering right along — slashing at Predators on the big screen, and now hunting space marines on the 360 in Aliens: Colonial Marines. The squadbased tactical first-person shooter has been in development since December 2006 at Dallas-based Gearbox Software, best known for its Brothers in Arms franchise.

“Our game is set after the events of [the film] Alien 3, which takes place very shortly after the end of Aliens,” explains Stephen Palmer, the game’s producer at Gearbox. “Our goal is to make a game that answers some of the questions from those two movies, and picks up the story basically right after the squad of marines was wiped out on LV-426 [the moon where humans first encountered the Aliens].”

Playing as a squad of four colonial marines, each with a unique personality and class, you’ve been ordered to investigate the USS Sulaco, the spaceship that Ripley used to escape at the end of Aliens, and that became derelict in Alien 3. “Since Aliens is our closest influence, we’ve strived for a level of authenticity to the films,” says Palmer. “The look of the game is directly inspired by the movies, down to the film grain and lighting. We’ve hired Syd Mead [designer of the Sulaco] to go back and create new concepts based on artwork that he made over 20 years ago — just so we can see what his vision was for the other areas of the Sulaco.”

In addition to the ship, the team at Gearbox performed exhaustive research on the weapons, vehicles, locations, armor, and Aliens seen in the movies. “We’ve received a ton of reference material directly from 20th Century Fox for this purpose — and it’s been a big help in getting everything just right,” Palmer adds. The full lineup of Aliens (a.k.a. Xenomorphs) isn’t being announced yet, but you can bet that it’ll include facehuggers, the classic acid-droolers, and at least one bitchy queen…Alien.

COMMENTS:

I think this game could end up going bad if they don't give the alien a smart A.I. and the ability to move all over its environment. they need to snag that moment when your being stalked by the alien the turn the corner and the tail moves, the alien unwinds then tries to de-brain you. Being a big fan of the movies and its little nuiances, if they can create the feeling of aliens, they could have a hit(i.e)make the weapons feel good to shoot, render the aliens with top notch graphic design, ''this is the 360 lets not go cheap there'', and do something believable with all the acid that going to get spilled.

yea i ahree with the guy under me theuy should make anew alien for this game. hell i mean doom had a different kind of main villian. so tge game looks good but i think it will be one of those one time games or a game tht you would only rent.({67})

Looks like a cool game. It might get a little boering after a while but all in all it looks like a pretty fun game. It would also be a good game if the creators made some type of new alien.

Split-screen FTW!

This looks good. I was hoping they wasn't going to be another AVP game, cause that dumb. But this actually goes with the series' story. I'm just guessing this is going to be a good one. Not just by the way the graphics look, but a 4 player story-line? Even if it isn't the best game, that would sound fun, and it's Aliens, it's more fun to shoot up Aliens than anything else. I just hope it isn't a letdown.

I hope we see the "dog" variant of the alien from the third film. That's what I liked about the aliens, they sort of develop according to what host they burst from. In the first two films they all came from humans but the third movie's creature looked different because its host was a dog.

This game looks and sounds sweet but I'm just worried that it will end up feeling like I'm playing a Doom or Quake with Aliens. Don't get me wrong cause I would love to shoot up some acid bleeding Aliens. Here's hoping it turns out.

Here's hoping this game is as sweet as it sounds...

Chuuuuuck we miss you on the PC Gamer Podcast. Please come baaack.

Also, good article. Wondering what they're gonna do to differentiate from other shooters. Maybe they'll have some awesome multiplayer mode involving getting one of those little aliens that lives inside of you and making it attack people on command. From inside of you. But I guess you'd be half dead by then.

I was wondering what you were doing with your "promotion" :D
