This Week in Xbox — 7/11

WORDS BY: Nic Vargus

Well, it’s the eve of E3, and that means rumors. This week’s This Week will cover all the big rumors we’ll know about in just a few more days. We’ve got everything from Led Zeppelin to a 60GB Xbox 360!

And She's (Not) Buying the Stairway to Heaven...

The reason you haven't seen Led Zeppelin in rhythm games is that the band is apparently uncomfortable lending out their master tracks, a necessary step that bands like Van Halen, the Eagles, Steely Dan, and Guns N’ Roses were willing to comply with. Without the master tracks, Led Zeppelin will not be featured in Guitar Hero or Rock Band anytime soon. But “It’s not about the money” Peter Mensch, a partner of Q-Prime Management (the company that manages Jimmy Paige), is quick to point out.

Verdict: If it’s not about money, you have to wonder why Cadillac gets to use Zeppelin’s songs in there commercials, or how P. Diddy got rights to use it on the Godzilla soundtrack. Huh.

Rock Band 2 Setlist, Apparently:

Rock Band 2 and Guitar Hero: World Tour setlists have been popping up all over the internet this week, and while it's possible that none of them are legitimate, it’s at least fun to read through what might end up being fans’ dreamlists.

Verdict: Some of these songs have our office screaming “Yes!" but with so many different leaks of different songs, this is obviously far from concluded.

Price Drop All but Confirmed for Xbox 360

This rumor has been updated and updated, and as the Xbox price drop is scheduled to go into effect this Sunday, this will hopefully be the last time the rumor gets circulated. As for the logistics, it’s looking like a $50 price cut on the 20GB model, which will finalize the price at $299.99. More at Kotaku.

Verdict: None needed — we’ll know by Sunday for sure. The real question is whether $50 is enough to get the Xbox moving off shelves again? Only time will tell.

60GB Xbox 360 Coming to a Store Near You?

This bit fits in rather nicely with our prior news up there. If you’ve been debating between a Pro and an Elite Xbox 360, this news may come at just the right time for you. Apparently, a leaked letter has indicated that a new 60GB model will be seeing the light of day rather soon.

Verdict: A 60GB model would certainly bridge the hard-drive line nicely, and it'd be an interesting conclusion to the rumors about the 20GB Xbox getting the axe. But for now it’s still technically a rumor.

Bungie Whispers and the World Goes Quiet

This one could mean nothing… or it could mean everything. During an interview, two Bungie employees seemed to be having fun suggesting that “something” would be announced on July 14.

Verdict: This is almost less than a rumor, but on the other hand it’s Bungie, so you’d be a fool not to pay attention.

COMMENTS:

Pick up a guitar, practice the Whole Lotta Love riff for about an hour, and you will feel the magic. I love Led Zeppelin, I own everyone of their albums, but not having them in Rockband doesnt bother me.

Led Zeppelin does not need the money and they never will. The only reason they would release their music into rockband or guitar hero would be to try to spur popularity back into their albums. To share their music with another generation. You sound foolish.

I'm probably in the minority here, but I don't really care too much at all that we're not getting Zeppelin. It would be fun to play some of their stuff, sure. But I've always thought they were way overrated to begin with, and their attitude has actually made me less excited about the idea of getting their stuff in Rock Band. I guess I kind of have as "fine, we don't need you anyways" attitude about it. :)

According to the video on Mission Metallica (ww.missionmetalica.com) it says that Metallica is the most requested band for both Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but we can clearly see that everyone, including me, wants to play Led Zeppelin with this beloved fake instruments. It makes me wonder, could this be the thrill of actually making something good after the crap they have done for more than 10 years?! I don't know but hey, Rock Band had announced a full lenght Metallica album for the game, and I don't still see it, what happened?! And now they are promising the first single from the new album to be playable in Rock Band.

Gamertag: Da Jimi
Man, Zeppelin needs to come around. I know people would be psyched to play their library, myself included.

A 60gb that leaves you with a respectable 59.5 of usable space? Fake! More like 49.5gb.

I hate how the connsumer gets shortchanged with those numbers.

The Xbox 360 has already had it's price drop. It is available in Target Stores. Here is the Engadget link with the story and Read link:

The 60GB hard drive would be awesome btw. I need a bigger hard drive but I don't want to pay for the 120GB version.

What's this Rock Band 2 you speak of? I'm excited for Harmonix's release of "Everlong: The videogame" and that's it.

Well, as for Led Zepplin, it took them forever to let their music be used in films. So don't hold your breath. A 60 Gig HDD will be great, here's hoping that it brings the 120 gig price down.

Here, Hold this for me!
