This Week In Xbox — 1/30

WORDS BY: Taylor Cocke

Wait! Don't Finish Him Yet! We Want More!

In its most recent press release, Midway announced that the last title in the storied Mortal Kombat series — Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe — has sold well over 1 million copies worldwide. Perhaps more exciting, Ed Boon, co-founder of the Mortal Kombat series and creative director at Midway, teased: "We're already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future."

VERDICT: A new Mortal Kombat game? What completely absurd crossover will we see next?

Drop That Beat, DJ Man

In an interview with CNBC, chairman and CEO of Blizzard Activision Robert Kotick announced his company's next foray into the world of music games — DJ Hero. "We have this product called DJ Hero coming out later this year which is a turntable that you can actually play competitively, spin discs and mix on," he said. No word on any prospective release dates, however.

VERDICT: Wait...hasn't this already been done? Oh right, Beatmania. Maybe Activision will do it right.

Another Heavy Blow!

Following Activision's announcement about Guitar Hero III's huge sales a couple of weeks ago, more big business news for the games industry has become apparent. Video Business tells us that, for the first time, videogames have passed up Blu-ray/DVD sales worldwide. Sales of games grew 20% to $32 billion, while DVD/Blu-ray sales slumped 6% to $29 billion.

VERDICT: Well, we're holding up our end of the market. Where you at, movies?

Well, Excuuuuuse Me Prince...ess...

Jamal Rguigui, in an interview with IGN, announced that the most recent game in the Prince of Persia series will be getting a new DLC experience, titled Epilogue. The content will take place, as the title suggests, after the events of the main game, and will be released on February 26. No word on pricing yet, though.

VERDICT: All right! More levels to (almost) die on!

Three Square Meals

Square Enix has announced that it will be bringing a "steady stream" of games to Xbox Live Arcade, starting with its popular iPod/iPhone title Crystal Defenders. Following that release, Nintendo DS puzzler Yosumin will be finding its way to the 360. Expect them to release in spring 2009.

VERDICT: A "steady stream," huh? How about some Final Fantasy Tactics? Please?

COMMENTS:

A new (hopefully much more graphic) Mortal Kombat sounds like great news but whats the word on some MK vs. DCU DLC??? I think some new arenas and some new fighters would be great! how about Reptile, Smoke, Cyrax, and johnny cage for the MK side and Lobo, Martian Manhunter, Bane, and Scarecrow for DC? as far as arenas, how about Arkham Asylum for starters?

I agree, an XBL version of Tactics would be amazing. I would probably spend more time on that than I do most retail games.
