Halo 3: ODST

WORDS BY: Ryan McCaffrey
Our exclusive hands-on time with Halo 3: ODST proves without a doubt: this is anything but an expansion pack

It’s been five years now since we salivated over the bacon-wrapped, butter-fried, immolated-ninja hype machine that was Halo 2. Three years later, Halo 3 came along, but by then we’d traversed a few Ring Worlds, slaughtered a couple thousand Covenant, and knew what to expect. You could say that Master Chief’s final bow was more like a Grand Slam Breakfast at Denny’s (hold the ninjas!): yummy, but entirely familiar. Halo-flavored comfort food, if you will.

Maybe that’s why we were so knocked on our heels by what our waitress, Flo (er, actually it was Bungie community guru Brian Jarrard, but roll with us here…), served up when we sat down at the developer’s secret satellite studio in Kirkland, Washington. We were there to play the first half of their imminent helljumper side-story, Halo 3: ODST. Tasting vaguely like mom’s home cooking — or at least, how we remember it — ODST packs much more subtle flavors, but it’s still drenched in a heaping helping of awesome sauce.

Forget what you heard about this being an appetizer-sized expansion pack: ODST has main course written all over it. A laser-guided, mecha T-Rex, Son of Krypton–worthy main course.

COMMENTS:

They need to look deeper- as I was exploring the city, I found a dead trio of Elites! ( after getting stuck in a dumpster, sadly) And you can get every weapon but the Energy Sword. Give the game a 10 already!

PS The Mongoose unlock is awesome!

awesome

ok might be a stupid question but u dont have to have halo 3 to play odst do you?

this games gonna be freaking epic/awesome!

I hope we get more weapons, but droppin' outta the sky sounds like fun(as long as the job comes with health care)I can't wait to start killin' some covenant freaks!

i love halo i have been playing since the first and all i can say is that halo 3 odst might be the best game bungie ever made i mean the graphics are awsome there is not one part of the game i dont like but its said how people are just getting this game for the halo 3 maps and for the achievements to get recon. i really kind of hate that some people wont even play the game.i mean the people put hard work in making this game the least u can do is try it out i mean why buy a game if all u want is some addons for a different game so i say shame on you for doing that

I hope Bungie makes some major improvements in the graphics department. It does seem like Bungie is putting greater emphasis on the campaign, which I believe is a step in the right direction.

I did the same thing bubba, I'm so excited for this and so thankful that PSU got a console up and swayed me to purchase this when it comes out!

I was fortunate to have already played bits of the new firefight mode, I played via a game station on the pennstate campus, and I have to say I am really excited for this game. The multiplayer will be fantastic and even though I am not buying it for the single player, I am interested to see where everything got its start.

Very much looking forward to this game!
